Old News
From Kent Adventure Gaming Society Wiki
The content of this page has had little to no effort made to organise it into a readable layout - it is largely here as just a content archive of news dating back into the ages. For the most part more recent content is at the top (but even this is a black art that makes no guarantees...).
GameCon News
Pre-registration for the RPG games being run at Gamecon is now open. Registration can be found here: http://gamecon.adventuregaming.co.uk/signups.php and clicking on each game will bring up a blurb beside the drop-down menu.
We are pleased to announce that we have now confirmed Dan Abnett and and Phil Masters as guest speakers to the convention this year.
Dan Abnett needs no introduction to aficionados of the comics industry or fans of fiction based on the Warhammer 40K universe. He is the creator of 2000AD fan favourite "Sinister Dexter" and other original stories such as "Atavar" and "Wardog" and has also worked on long-running strips including "Judge Dredd", "Durham Red" and "Rogue Trooper" for the British anthology comic. Dan has also worked at Marvel and DC, with notable work including "Death's Head 2", "Knights of Pendragon" and "The Punisher" for Marvel and "Legion Lost" and "The Legion" for DC.
Dan has written prolifically in the Warhammer 40K universe, with his books including the "Gaunt's Ghosts" series, the "Eisenhorn" trilogy and the "Horus Heresy" trilogy.
Dan's other forays into fictional universes have included a "Torchwood" novel and work on dark superhero series "The Authority".
Phil Masters is perhaps best known as the co-author of "GURPS Discworld" and "Discworld Also" with Terry Pratchett himself. He has also worked on "GURPS Transhuman Space", "GURPS Banestorm" and a large number of other GURPS supplements from Steve Jackson Games.
Phil has also published three short stories in renowned science fiction magazine "Interzone" and retains an immense affection for the genre although he doesn't have as much time to write in it as he would like.
We're very pleased that Dan and Phil have agreed to be our guest speakers at the convention and we hope that you will all enjoy the opportunity to meet these stalwarts of the geeky scene.
We'll let you have more information about the timing and scheduled events a bit closer to the time!
Bowling & Dinner
We are going bowling at Bugsy's Ice & Bowl and then dining at Chom Chom on the 13th November. A £5 deposit is required for each of these events, which you will need to pay to the treasurer by Saturday 6th November in order for us to make reservations at Bugsy's and at Chom Chom. You can sign up to the new Facebook Group (AGS) to check out upcoming dates and to state your intention to come along to either the bowling or the meal.
The price for bowling will probably come to around £13.50 a head, the price at Chom Chom is £14.95 for all you can eat, not including drinks or service.

General Meeting (With elections)/Weekly Gaming Meeting |
Elections
At the General Meeting on the 16th of October we elected a new President (congratulations to Louise Coulson) and a new Treasurer (congratulations to Daniel Painter). In addition James Galloway retained his role of Senior Member and Jules Andreae was elected to Librarian, with Sam and Josh co-opted as his assistants.
In order to be our president Louise has had to step down from her role as Secretary and we therefore need to elect a new Secretary. This election will be held in two weeks at our regular weekly meeting on Saturday 30th October at 14:00 in the Keynes Upper Teaching Area.
Secretary (Core Position)
The Secretary is, in many ways, the most important member of the committee. Not only are they responsible for sending out meeting notices, taking minutes of meetings and otherwise organising the society, but also for liaising with the Union and the University to ensure that all the gamers who want rooms on campus have them.
Key traits for successful Secretaries are:
- Good organisational skills
- Enthusiasm and commitment to the role
- Excellent people and communication skills
- A thick skin for dealing with the fallout when a room booking goes wrong (as it inevitably will)
- Adaptability and grace under pressure
Who can stand for the position?
- Any FULL (i.e. Student) member of the society is eligible to stand for the position of Secretary.
I want to stand for a position, what do I need to do?
- Please e-mail your intention to stand and a manifesto to the AGS mailing list at games@adventuregaming.co.uk.
- Your manifesto should be no more than 500 words and should be sent by no later than Monday 25th October.
- Manifestos will be published on the AGS Website.
- You must either attend the General Meeting on 25th October or designate an individual to represent you at the meeting. If you intend to do the latter please ensure that you notify the mailing list with the name of your representative.
- The election will be held in accordance with Kent Union procedures. Candidates will be given a set amount of time to speak and to answer questions from the membership of the Society before the election is held by Single Transferable Vote. Only Full Members of the society are eligible to vote as Secretary is a Core Position.
Manifestos for October 2010 Committee Elections
Elections
At the General Meeting on the 16th of October we will be holding elections for the core committee positions which are currently unfilled and for the Librarian and Senior Member positions.
What are the positions available?
President (Core Position)
The President is responsible for liaising with the Kent Union Activities officer and university staff in respect of the society, organising the allocation of tasks to other members of the society during the planning of society events, attending to the bureaucracy required in order to maintain the society (including appearances at relevant meetings of the Student Union as necessary), and dealing with any concerns relating to other members of the committee.
Successful Presidents tend to be charismatic and able public speakers. The ability to tactfully and diplomatically handle interpersonal conflicts would be very useful. Presidents are valued for the enthusiasm and ideas they bring to the society.
Treasurer (Core Position)
The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining the society's budget, keeping records of money spent and money remaining, liaising with Kent Union as necessary to obtain funds from either the society budget or to make Development Fund applications, and to assist in the smooth running of the society in general.
Successful Treasurers tend to be good team players who are efficient and enthusiastic. Basic maths skills are also a bonus, as is a tendency not to flee with large(ish) sums of money to the Bahamas when given the opportunity.
Odd Bod No. 2 - Librarian (Non-Core Position)
The Librarian is responsible for maintaining the AGS Library. Accurate records must be kept as to which member has what books, and efforts made to retrieve books that are overdue for return. The Librarian must be able to attend a majority of the Saturday weekly meetings in order to be able to provide members access to the Library. The Librarian will also need to catalogue the library and keep an up-to-date listing of all books and their status on the AGS Website.
Successful Librarians are organised, enthusiastic and helpful.
Senior Member (Non-Core Position)
The Senior Member is responsible for being the 'adult' of the society. He or she is responsible for assisting in smoothing over any difficulties among the committee and for helping members if they have any issues with the President or other committee members about which they do not feel they can speak with the President.
The Senior Member is otherwise responsible for assisting with the smooth running of the society, providing ideas and support to the society as a whole.
Who can stand for a position?
- Any FULL (i.e. Student) member of the society is eligible to stand for one of the core committee positions.
- ANY member is eligible to stand for the position of Librarian.
- Any member of the society who is also a member of staff at the University or a postgraduate student is eligible to stand for the position of Senior Member.
I want to stand for a position, what do I need to do?
- Please e-mail your intention to stand and a manifesto to the AGS mailing list at games@adventuregaming.co.uk.
- Your manifesto should be no more than 500 words and should be sent by no later than Monday 11th October.
- Manifestos will be published on the AGS Website.
- You must either attend the General Meeting on 16th October or designate an individual to represent you at the meeting. If you intend to do the latter please ensure that you notify the mailing list with the name of your representative.
- The election for Core positions will be held in accordance with Kent Union procedures. Candidates will be given a set amount of time to speak and to answer questions from the membership of the Society before the election is held by Single Transferable Vote. Only Full Members of the society are eligible to vote on Core Positions.
- Election of Non-Core Positions will be held in accordance with AGS procedures. ALL members of the Society are eligible to vote on Non-Core Positions.
Intro Meeting Events
The AGS Intro Meeting is where we get to know you and vice versa. We welcome gamers and (currently) non-gamers alike: Whether you're a veteran hand at D&D or Exalted or think an RPG is a rocket-propelled grenade, you're welcome to come along and find out what it's all about.
During the meeting you will get to:
- Meet the committee - Find out who we are and what we do for you
- Find out what the AGS has to offer
- Hear brief explanations of the core activities supported by the society
- Hear about games that are running or soon to be run, and which have open slots for new players
- Receive your membership card if you're already signed up as a member of the AGS, entitling you to a 10% discount at Westgate Games
- Play a selection of introductory games designed to give a relaxing introduction to the hobby for anyone who hasn't tried it
The meeting is usually a lot of fun and it's the easiest and best way to see what games and events are planned for the forthcoming year.

DISCAIMER Adventure Gaming Society encourages you to bring your games but we will not be responsible for any damage/theft of equipment and games at GameCon on Saturday 13th
Welcome to the AGS 2009/10!
It's a new academic year and the Adventure Gaming Society has a lot planned, starting with our intro meeting on Saturday 26 September, 2pm in Rutherford Lecture Theatre 1. This is a chance to see what the society is doing, sign up for games running this term and play some games afterwards. We hope to see you all there.
AGS Summer Term
Good luck to all those taking exams this term. There will be no regular AGS meetings on Saturdays as you've become used to. However room bookings can still be made via our secretary, Hugh, although please bear in mind that availability of certain preferential locations can be a problem during the exam term. Keep an eye on the mailing list and forum for one-off events or ongoing games, and have a great summer, everyone!
Thursday Room Bookings for week 24
Our faithful secretary just received word that Darwin Missing Link has been overbooked this Thursday evening. If you are one of the games that would have been running in DML8 or DML9 you instead have Rutherford Cloisters 19 and 20 booked from 1900-2300. Any questions, drop Hugh a line (ha93@kent.ac.uk).
End of Spring Term
The last Saturday campus meeting of the year is now gone, but for those who aren't immediately vanishing into the blue beyond for Easter weekend we'll be lurking around town this coming week for some gaming shenanigans instead. See the forum thread here for more information.
Geekfest 2009
This is a joint event with SFX and Anime. Thankfully it is rearranged and set to go! There will be music and games (well, a piñata anyway!), as well as a quiz, costume competition and a raffle with prizes! It will be held in the Lighthouse, above the Venue, starting about 7pm and ending when they throw us out. Remember if you arrive after 10pm you will have to pay to enter the building, so it's worth being prompt.
The Roleplaying Workshop 2009
It's now available for download (warning: 79Mb file).
The AGS Quiz
The AGS Quiz is confirmed for Saturday 21st March, starting at 2pm in Rutherford Lecture Theatre One. The entry fee is a mere pound per person, and this will be ploughed directly into runners-up prizes for the second and third place teams.
The first prize is a glorious £50 to spend in any way you like at Westgate Games!
The quiz is designed for gamers and non gamers alike, although a current of geekery will run deep through the questions.
It's official, the rounds this year are (in no particular order):
- Myths And Legends
- Science Fiction & Fantasy
- Science & Nature
- What Happens Next (A video round)
- Gamer's Advantage (The only round of the quiz that makes it useful to be an RPG/Computer/Console/Board Gamer)
- Chillers & Thrillers
- Random (A bizarre general knowledge round)
- Caption Competition
- Art & Literature
In addition to all of these will be a Marathon round for you to complete in between the other rounds. This is designed by our webmonkey as usual, and I hear he has something pretty fun planned this year...
So gather your friends, whether they're gamers or not, and join me for an afternoon of geekery and wisdom on the 21st March!
- Skimble

GameCon: Day of the Dice Feedback
GameCon: Day of the Dice ran with reasonable success: the library has around £90 to spend on new books for you to use (suggestions to Dave please!) and we raised £50 for the RNLI as well as playing a lot of games and generally having a pretty good time, hopefully.
Thank you to everyone who participated by helping out running something, fetching and carrying or just coming along, with particular kudos to our visiting LARPers (we hope to see you again!) and the SFXers who came along to support the e-gaming and got roped into doing some other things too.
If anyone has any feedback or suggestions they would like to leave with regards to the con, in order to help out next year's committee when their turn comes, please leave a note in this thread.
AGS Annual General Meeting 21st February
This week's Saturday meeting @ 2pm in KS12 will kick off with the year's AGM. As well as brief reports from the society's committee we will be holding elections for next year's committee positions including the award for Most Dim Witted Homo Sapiens. The AGM will be followed by the usual selection of RPGs, board games and general tomfoolery. See the forum for more information.
Geekfest CANCELLED
Geekfest has been cancelled due to snow hazard! Repeat, do NOT turn up to the Lighthouse tomorrow for Geekfest as you'll be by yourself and very probably find the doors locked to boot.
New Term
Hope everyone had a good holiday and is ready to get gaming again! First meeting of the new term will be Saturday 24th January at 2pm in Keynes 12-14 as normal. Check out the forum thread for more information.
Happy Holidays
From everyone here at the Adventure Gaming Society, we wish everyone (including GMs) a Merry Christmas (or appropriate seasonal greeting) and a Happy New Year. See you in 2009!
Mailing List
We've been getting a lot of reports of people who think they should be on the mailing list but aren't. If you think you should be on the list but aren't at the very least receiving the weekly notificiations about the Saturday meetings, please let Andy know asap so he can sort you out. (webmonkey@adventuregaming.co.uk)
Or you can click on the About the AGS link and sign yourself up (I've made the link to sign up nice and bold on the page since it was previously buried in a lot of text -Andy)
Position of Secretary
As nobody stepped up for the election, Dave Stibbards has kindly agreed to serve as interim secretary until such a time as he can train up volunteers who don't want to go into the job not knowing how to do it. If you're interested email djs43@kent.ac.uk.
Election Meeting
Unfortunately our wonderful and hard-working secretary Terri has had to resign from her position for personal reasons, effective immediately. As a result the AGS is in desperate need of a new secretary! The meeting this coming Saturday will therefore open with an election for the position. If you are interested, or would like more information, please email Roo (rw54@kent.ac.uk) as soon as possible.
Saturday Meetings Update
We can now confirm the room bookings for Saturdays from 14-2200 in KS 12, 13 and 14 for the rest of term. Please check the forum to see what's happening where.
Christmas AGM
Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting yesterday. Hopefully everyone had fun with the tomfoolery, games and nibbles. Hugh is now the society secretary, and Dave has been elected as our new librarian. The amended constitution has also been voted in so that's the paperwork out of the way.
There will be no further AGS Saturday meetings until next term.
15th November 2008: Next Meeting
Discussion is now taking place on the forum for the upcoming weekly meeting. Looks like the Tarrik game will be kicking off along with a Necessary Evil game. Stop by to register your interest or offer your services!
17th October 2008: Meeting Tomorrow
It's that time of week again, and this week AGS will finally be hitting Keynes (not literally...well, maybe literally...). We're up in the teaching area of the college where there'll be general gaming in KS14, RPGs in KS13 and the wargamers in KS12 at 2pm.
The RPGs running are Serenity (GM me, very limited spaces left!) and Bloodsucker: The Angst, GM Ian. More info and pleading for spaces is available on the forum.
There will also be a committee meeting in the Keynes lounge at 1pm which is open to anyone who wants to wander down and see what we're blathering about.
17th October 2008: Dragon Droppings
The new issue of Dragon Droppings is now available to download. Printed copies will hopefully be available at the meeting tomorrow.
4th October 2008: Coffeeshop Crash
At 2pm the committee will be meeting in front of the Templeman Library to lead a tour down into town, stopping at Incognito Comics and Westgate Games (where you get your member's discounts) before crashing in to Coffee and Corks for an afternoon of games. Don't be late!
29th September 2008: Game list updated
The list of Games has now been updated with all the games announced at the Introductory Meeting. If you're looking for a game to play, head over there now to see what's running. If you've got a game to add or want to update details of your game on the page, then email me or the secretary with details.
26th September 2008: Welcome new members!
A big hello to everyone who signed up to the society at the Freshers Fair! Remember that the Introductory Meeting is tomorrow (Saturday) at 2pm in Rutherford College, Lecture Theatre 1; this is a chance to find out what's happening in the society, sign up to games running this year, and hear about our forthcoming events. There is also a raffle with lots of cool prizes, and a selection of games run after the meeting for you to try. Until then, see what's already on the Games page, and check out the Forum.
25th September 2008: Fresher's Fair Today
Find the society at the Freshers Fair, starting at 12 noon today.
22nd September 2008
Fresher's Fair is this Thursday; the committee will be there (mostly in costume). The Introductory Meeting is this Saturday (27 September) at 2pm, in Rutherford College, Lecture Theatre 1.
9th September 2008
The minutes from the last committee meeting are now available.
22nd August 2008
The new design for the front page of the AGS site has gone live. Feel free to join in with the Website thread over on the forum to talk about other improvements that we might make to the web site.
29th June 2008
Just to let everyone know that AGS will still be alive over the summer for those who remain in Canterbury. Don't forget to keep an eye on the forum and the mailing list for events people are trying to organise: if we offer 'em and you decline 'em, you've only yourselves to blame.
Have a great summer, everyone!
17th June 2008
Someone posted spam links on the Main page, but these changes have now been reverted. Hopefully we can keep them off the site in future.
The minutes from the last committee meeting are now online. Any questions or comments, please email Roo. We are particularly looking for GMs to run some one-off freeform LARPs next year. If you think you're up to it, please let a member of the committee know as soon as possible.
Our board games social for this month will be taking place this Saturday at 2pm in Coffee and Corks down in town. Just head for Westgate Games from Seista and keep checking on your left, you can't miss it. Obviously we may have to move about a bit depending how busy it is, but we'll be there to start with.
We are planning to run some regular socials and one-off roleplays over the summer for those who remain in Canterbury. If you know anyone who is still not on the mailing list but should be, please alert the webmonkey.
Committee Meeting
Hope those doing or otherwise involved with exams begin to recover soon! The next committee meeting will be at 3pm on Saturday 14th June in the Starbucks next to the cathedral in town. As always, anyone who wants to attend is welcome. We'll be discussing, amongst other things: plans for freshers, the general sorting out of the horribly out-of-date constitution, some early ideas for general events next year and anything else anyone can think of. The minutes are now available.
AGM
Thanks to everyone who turned up to the AGM, and at the suggestion of Mike a facebook group has now been created. No changes were made to the committee.
AGM this Saturday
The annual general meeting for this term is taking place on Saturday, 17th May at 2pm in KLSR4 (not our usual room because they are being used for exams). We have to room till late so if you want to bring board games and stuff then feel free. As is tradition we will be giving out prizes for the Most Dim-witted Homo Sapiens and Most Diabolical Bastard awards, and of course be holding the elections.
Any queries about running for positions, or what the committee jobs entail, check out the committee page and feel free to email anyone about their jobs.
The AGS Quiz
10th May, 2008
2pm RLT1
2008 brings the fifth annual AGS Quiz.
The aim of the quiz is to gather the Society members, their friends, their stuffed animals, their family, their navel lint and any other random people they're able to grab to join their team and answer a plethora of questions on a variety of fun, obscure, or random subjects.
The quiz is largely dominated by general knowledge questions, spun in a slightly geeky way, so that both gamers and non-gamers stand a chance of answering correctly. That said, there is always the Gamer Advantage round, which gives a slight advantage to the gamers on the team.
Snacks will be provided by the AGS, but in order to fund some of the prizes we will be asking everyone who joins a team to contribute a single pound of your Earth money to the kitty.
In case you are interested, you may peruse the list of questions and answers for the non-audio-visual rounds of the previous two quizzes on the AGS Quiz Questions page. Maybe it will help you to figure out how my mind works and give you a slight advantage in the quiz...
The quiz this year will feature the following rounds:
* Science and Nature * Gamer's Advantage * World Aware * Random * Chillers and Thrillers * Art and Literature * Science Fiction & Fantasy * What Happens Next * Caption Competition * Marathon 'round'
See you there!
15th March, 2008
Shout out to everyone who came to AGS Con this year, we hope you had a good time! Thanks to everyone who turned up we made a total of around £70 for the RNLI. Our next big event is the AGS Quiz, so watch this space for more information.
15th March, 2008
AGS Con 2008
AGS Con takes place tomorrow! Doors open at 9am and the first game will begin at 10am in the Missing Link. Don't forget some 20p pieces for your raffle tickets, we've got some great prizes lined up, if it's still not too late to pre-register for any games you want to take part in so head over to the con webpage and get ready!
13th March, 2008
ALL THOSE WITH ROOM BOOKINGS IN THE MISSING LINK! In the week starting on 17th of March the Drama department has contrived to book all the rooms in the Missing Link so all AGS bookings have been thrown out. Yes, again. Planning for retaliatory action will be taking place as soon as we have the budget for our own fleet of warships. Anyway, if you need a room rebooked elsewhere for this week you need to email Terri (secretary@adventuregaming.co.uk) as soon as possible for alternative arrangements. By as soon as possible we mean by Friday Noon!!! Nowhere will accept bookings for the same week as the request!
